Married Couple Looking at Old-Growth Redwood Trees on Simpson-Reed Trail, Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, California

On the 2nd day of the trip, Samantha and I visited the Trees of Mystery after breakfast then went up to Crescent City for lunch afterwards. Though Crescent City is technically in California, it resembles Oregon more than the rest of California as it’s just south of the border. The people are very friendly. We went to the pier adjacent to the Battery Point Lighthouse and saw this Oregon family that was crab fishing. I had never seen this one type of crab they caught so I asked a few questions about crab fishing. They explained the process and offered to let me throw the line out and haul one back in. I declined but we stuck around to watch them for a while. Pretty interesting.

After the pier, we decided to explore another redwood forest. I had never been to the redwood parks in Del Norte County before so I brought along my copy of Gary Crabbe’s Photographing Northern California book and decided to check out Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park which was located nearby. What peaked my interest was the description that Gary wrote in his book. He mentioned that the Ewok scenes from Return of the Jedi was filmed here so how could I pass that up? Return of the Jedi was one of the first movies I recall seeing in a theatre when I was young boy!

Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park is awesome.
